The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is thrilled to be among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2013 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Richard Greenberg

Nominated for Best Play, The Assembled Parties
"I had been intending to sleep through the entire day, or maybe the month. I figured, 'How can I not know about this and just somehow go to previews for Far From Heaven?' Finally, I realized that wasn’t going to work, so I went online and said, ‘What the heck?’ saw my e-mails, and figured, ’OK, well, I was nominated. That was only 20 minutes ago! I haven’t told anybody yet. It was everybody telling me. They all knew before I did. It feels different this time because I’m 10 years older. [Greenberg won the 2003 Best Play Tony for Take Me Out.] The first time, you can’t believe it. I can’t believe this one either. When you hear it, you feel like you’re back in high school, acting in Inherit the Wind, thinking of what life might bring. You revert to childhood and the fulfillment of some dreamy teenage fantasy or something. I think I’ll figure out how I feel later in the day. Not to get too Kander and Ebb about it, but celebrating is ‘a quiet thing’ for me. I’ll e-mail my cast and thank them for everything. Maybe I’ll have a drink later."
